Urogenital Cancer Medical Oncologists in Melbourne
Urogenital cancers include malignancies affecting the urinary system and male reproductive organs, as well as selected adrenal cancers managed within this oncology stream. Northern Blood & Cancer Care provides specialist medical oncology care in Melbourne for adrenocortical cancer, bladder and other urothelial cancers, kidney (renal) cancer, testicular cancer and penile cancer. Prostate cancer is covered separately on our dedicated Prostate Cancer page.
Surgery may be the main treatment for localised disease, while medical oncology becomes particularly important when treatment is required before or after surgery, when cancer has spread, or when immunotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted medicines or other systemic treatments are being considered. Care is coordinated with urologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and other specialists according to the diagnosis.
Testicular cancer most often develops from germ cells and commonly affects younger men. It is divided broadly into seminoma and non-seminomatous germ-cell tumours, which differ in their behaviour and treatment. Assessment includes ultrasound, staging imaging and tumour markers such as AFP, beta-hCG and LDH. Surgery to remove the affected testicle is usually the first treatment and provides the definitive pathology. Depending on stage and risk, some patients need surveillance while others receive chemotherapy or, less commonly, radiotherapy. Fertility and sperm banking should be discussed before treatment when future fertility is important.
Investigation begins by confirming the exact site and tumour type. Imaging may include CT, MRI, PET or other specialised scans depending on the cancer. Tissue diagnosis is usually important before systemic treatment is started, although some tumours are treated surgically first when the imaging and clinical situation are sufficiently characteristic. Blood tests assess organ function and treatment fitness, while tumour markers or hormone studies are used when they are relevant to the specific cancer.
Molecular and biomarker testing increasingly influences treatment for advanced urogenital cancers. Examples include testing for actionable alterations in selected urothelial cancers and genomic features that may guide targeted or immune-based treatment. The medical oncologist integrates these results with stage, previous treatment, kidney and liver function, other illnesses and the patient’s priorities before recommending a treatment plan.

Systemic treatment can include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted medicines, antibody-drug conjugates or other cancer-specific therapies. The aim may be to reduce the chance of recurrence after local treatment, improve the effectiveness of surgery or radiotherapy, or control advanced disease and its symptoms. Treatment is monitored with blood tests, clinical review and imaging, with dose or schedule changes made when needed for safety.
Northern Blood & Cancer Care provides private medical oncology consultations at Northern Private Hospital in Epping and can coordinate day treatment through Northern Private Hospital or Northern Health when clinically appropriate. Where a rare cancer, complex operation, specialised radiotherapy, nuclear medicine treatment or clinical trial requires tertiary expertise, the treating oncologist can coordinate referral while remaining involved in the patient’s ongoing oncology care.
If you are attending for a new consultation, please bring a current referral, medication list and any relevant pathology, imaging, operative or hospital reports. If you have had a biopsy or surgery, the pathology report is particularly useful. Please also bring details of previous cancer treatment and, where available, molecular or genetic test results. Your specialist will explain the diagnosis, whether additional staging or testing is required and the systemic treatment options that are relevant to your situation. You are welcome to bring a family member or support person.
