Thank you for choosing Northern Blood & Cancer Care. We understand that an appointment with a haematologist or medical oncologist may follow an unexpected blood result, a new diagnosis or a period of uncertainty. Our aim is to make the process as clear as possible and ensure your specialist has the information needed to provide a useful assessment.
Please arrive approximately 10 minutes before your appointment unless our team has advised otherwise. This allows time to confirm your personal details, referral and Medicare information. Some consultations take longer than expected because another patient may need urgent or complex discussion. We make every effort to run on time and appreciate your understanding if an unavoidable delay occurs.
At your first consultation, your specialist will review the reason for referral, symptoms, medical history, medications and previous investigations. You may need additional blood tests, imaging, pathology review or other diagnostic procedures before a final diagnosis or treatment plan can be made. If you have had relevant tests elsewhere, please arrange for the reports to be sent to our rooms before the appointment where possible.
You are welcome to bring a partner, family member, friend or other support person. This can be particularly helpful when a new diagnosis or complex treatment options are being discussed.
After an appointment is booked, you may be asked to complete an online patient registration form before attending. Completing this in advance reduces paperwork on the day and helps our team prepare your medical record. If you are unable or prefer not to complete the form online, please contact reception or allow additional time before your appointment.
Your specialist will explain the next step, which may be further investigation, observation, treatment or follow-up. If tests are arranged, the team will advise how and when the results will be reviewed. Cancer or blood disorder treatment may be delivered through Northern Private Hospital, Northern Health or another appropriate service depending on the treatment required and your individual circumstances.

Northern Blood & Cancer Care is a private specialist practice and consultation fees generally involve an out-of-pocket cost. A valid referral allows eligible Medicare card holders to claim the applicable specialist rebate. Private health insurance generally relates to admitted or day-hospital treatment and does not usually pay for routine outpatient specialist consultations. If you do not have Medicare, you can still attend as a self-funded patient. Please contact reception for current consultation fees or if you need an estimate before your appointment.
If your care may be funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, an insurer or another third party, please contact the clinic before your appointment so the team can confirm whether prior approval or additional documentation is required for the particular specialist and service.
Telehealth availability varies between specialists and is often most suitable for selected follow-up appointments. Some consultations require a physical examination or review of new findings in person. Please contact reception to ask whether telehealth is appropriate for your appointment and to confirm any Medicare eligibility requirements that apply at the time.
If you cannot attend, please give the clinic as much notice as possible so the appointment can be offered to another patient. Ask reception about the current cancellation policy when booking, particularly for longer new-patient appointments or procedures.
