Haematology & Supportive Clinical Services in Melbourne

Northern Blood & Cancer Care provides and coordinates a range of diagnostic, infusion and supportive clinical services used in haematology and cancer care. These services sit alongside our dedicated Cancer Therapy branch and can be arranged through Northern Private Hospital or Northern Health when clinically appropriate, allowing specialist consultation, treatment planning and ongoing review to remain closely connected.

Personalised Care, Modern Facilities

The service recommended depends on the diagnosis, relevant blood or pathology results, previous treatment, other medical conditions and the patient’s individual needs. Your specialist will explain why a particular infusion, transfusion or procedure is being recommended, how it is performed and what monitoring or follow-up is required.

Clinical Services

Services coordinated by the Northern Blood & Cancer Care team include:

Iron infusions deliver iron directly into a vein and may be recommended when oral iron is not tolerated, is poorly absorbed, has not worked adequately or is unlikely to restore iron stores quickly enough. Northern Blood & Cancer Care can assess the underlying cause of iron deficiency, confirm whether intravenous iron is appropriate and coordinate treatment through hospital-based day services. Ongoing review is important when iron deficiency is recurrent, pregnancy-related or associated with another haematological condition.

Blood transfusions and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) are supportive treatments used across a range of haematological and immune-mediated conditions. Red cells or platelets may be transfused when blood counts are significantly reduced, while IVIG can be used in selected immune conditions such as immune thrombocytopenia or antibody deficiency. Northern Blood & Cancer Care assesses the clinical indication, monitors the underlying disorder and coordinates transfusion or infusion treatment through appropriate hospital services when required.

Therapeutic venesection involves removing a prescribed amount of blood to reduce excess iron or an abnormally high red blood cell mass. It is commonly used for conditions such as hereditary haemochromatosis and polycythaemia vera. Northern Blood & Cancer Care can investigate the cause of raised ferritin, iron overload or elevated haemoglobin, determine whether venesection is appropriate and establish the treatment target and frequency. Ongoing monitoring helps ensure venesection remains aligned with the underlying condition.

A bone marrow biopsy is used to examine the tissue where blood cells are produced and can help investigate persistent or unexplained abnormalities in blood counts. It may be recommended when conditions such as leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative neoplasms or marrow failure are suspected. Northern Blood & Cancer Care can coordinate bone marrow biopsy as part of a broader haematology assessment, with the results interpreted alongside blood tests, pathology and the patient’s clinical history.

Coordinated Specialist Care

These services are not provided in isolation. The same haematology or oncology team can review results, monitor the underlying condition and coordinate supportive care. For patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy or hormone therapy, clinical services such as transfusion support and other procedures can be integrated with the wider cancer treatment plan. Infectious diseases input is available within Northern Blood & Cancer Care, while other supportive services can be coordinated through hospital or external providers when required.
