Information for referrers

For Referrers

Northern Blood & Cancer Care welcomes referrals from GPs, specialists and allied health professionals for haematology, medical oncology and related specialist services. Our clinicians are happy to discuss a patient when the appropriate referral pathway is uncertain, particularly for urgent blood abnormalities, suspected blood cancer, a new cancer diagnosis or complex anticoagulation and bleeding questions.

How to Make a Referral

Please include the reason for referral, relevant history, current medications and the investigations already completed. For haematology referrals, serial full blood counts and other relevant pathology are particularly useful. For oncology referrals, please include pathology or histology, operative reports and staging imaging where available. Referrer contact details and provider number should also be included.

Referrals can be sent using the channels listed below. Where an electronic referral option is not listed, please contact the clinic to confirm the current details.

Referral Review & Urgent Appointments

Referrals are triaged by the clinical team, with referrals generally reviewed within one week. If you believe a patient requires urgent assessment, please clearly mark the referral “URGENT” and phone the rooms on (03) 8408 6000 so the request can be brought to the attention of the appropriate specialist.

Private Consultations & Hospital Care

Northern Blood & Cancer Care is a private specialist practice. Medicare-eligible patients with a valid referral can generally claim the applicable Medicare rebate for specialist consultations. Patients without Medicare may attend as self-funded patients. Private health insurance is relevant to eligible admitted or day-hospital treatment rather than routine outpatient specialist consultations, and coverage depends on the patient’s policy and hospital arrangements.

The specialists have clinical links with Northern Private Hospital and Northern Health. Where hospital treatment, public care, a tertiary service or a clinical trial is required, the treating specialist will explain the most appropriate pathway for the individual patient.
